Interior stucco is created using a faux material like joint compound or a thick plaster. So, the process of removing of painted stucco from interior walls, is easier than exterior stucco, but rather labour intensive and time consuming. Step 1- Preparation
Remove the furniture and other items that you can from a room. Cover the rest of the area with plastic sheeting or drop cloths. Make sure the entire floor is also protected.
Step 2 – Tools
Fill a spray bottle with warm water. Prepare a blade and a rubber mallet.
Step 3 – Scoring
Place a 4-inch metal paint scraper against the stucco and tap the end of the handle with a rubber mallet trying to break the surface of the stucco. Then do the same procedure from the floor to the ceiling in a straight line every 3 feet along the wall.
Step 4 – Soaking
Spray all stucco surface of the wall; concentrate on saturating where you have placed your score marks. Leave the moisture soak in for 10 minutes, then spray the surface again. Continue doing until the stucco starts to feel pliable to the touch. Do not use a pressure washer, because it will put out too much water and pressure and potential damage the supporting wall behind the stucco.
Step 5 – Removing stucco
Place the blade into one of your score marks, after that tilt the handle down at a 30-degree angle to the wall. Tap the end of the handle gently with a rubber mallet to start the scraper under the stucco layer. Remove the rest by scraping it by hand. If it is necessary, reapply water to the stucco to soften it.
